After ten years of creating ambitious immersive experiences for clients and cultural partners, Glitch Studios is taking a major step toward becoming an entertainment studio: developing its own IP for a new location-based virtual reality franchise rooted in Viking history and Norse mythology.

Myth of Yggdrasil is the first episode in Viking Adventures, a series of collaborative free-roaming VR experiences designed for commercial venues with high audience throughput. Following a successful Norwegian launch in Tromsø, Glitch is now introducing the franchise to international operators, distributors and licensing partners.

From award-winning client projects to original IP

Over the past decade, Glitch Studios has created immersive experiences for commercial clients and cultural partners alike. The subjects, platforms and audiences have varied, but the central challenge has remained the same: creating memorable experiences in which narrative and immersive technology work together, placing the audience at the heart of every story.

A defining milestone came with Briar & Rose, an augmented-reality theatre production created together with three Norwegian theatres. The project blended live actors with digital characters in a shared AR environment and demonstrated Glitch’s ability to deliver ambitious location-based entertainment for a live audience at scale.

The production toured more than 50 theatres across Norway and was recognised across Europe for its innovation and achievements, earning Glitch several prestigious awards, including AIXR’s XR Location-Based Entertainment of the Year award.

For Glitch, the significance went beyond the awards. It fuelled a larger strategic ambition to develop its own original IP for the growing international LBVR entertainment market.

“Sometimes you have to find your inner Viking and just go for it. After a decade of helping clients and cultural partners create immersive experiences, both Glitch and the technology felt ready. We had built the skills and the mindset needed to take on an adventure of this scale.”
– Sami Hamid, Studio Producer, Glitch Studios

Myth of Yggdrasil – A magical journey to save the World Tree

The choice of Vikings felt natural for a Norwegian studio. It offered a cultural foundation close to home yet familiar enough internationally to give the franchise the commercial spark it needed. Glitch worked with Norwegian historians throughout development, drawing on research into Viking life, dress and mythology to make the world feel grounded in reality. The aim was not to create a museum reconstruction, but an entertaining, accessible experience with a credible sense of place.

From the outset, Glitch wanted the experience to work for families and groups, including guests with little or no VR experience. Rather than building the adventure around Viking combat, Myth of Yggdrasil makes cooperation and runestone magic its central mechanics: players must stay together and combine their runestones to overcome the challenges in front of them and to move the narrative forward.

Yggdrasil, the World Tree, gave Glitch a natural framework for a Viking family adventure where staying together and collaborating as a group becomes more than a central game mechanic: it becomes the emotional core of the experience.

“When we began working with the myth of the World Tree, it felt strikingly contemporary. In a world shaped by climate crisis, wars and global conflict, the idea that we are stronger when we come together-and that we can help restore what is damaged-felt both urgent and hopeful.”
– Tobias Barvik, Director, Myth of Yggdrasil

From Tromsø to an international franchise

With the first Viking Adventures venue now operating in Tromsø, Norway, Glitch has moved from development into live operation.

Myth of Yggdrasil is the first in a planned series of 30-minute, standalone experiences that use the same footprint and audience traffic flow. Designed for an approximately 250 m² playable area, the experience footprint can adapt to a range of venue shapes.

One footprint. Multiple adventures.

With Episode 2 already in pre-production, operators can plan for repeat visits, fresh campaigns, greater longevity for their infrastructure and an ongoing content relationship with Glitch.

The installation is supported by a marketing asset pack and merchandising support, helping new venue partners launch quickly and begin selling tickets. With two further venues already planned in Norway, Glitch is now seeking international operators, distributors and licensing partners to bring Viking Adventures to new audiences.

“What we installed in Tromsø was a partial turnkey solution. In addition to providing the experience licence, we helped bring together the tracking space, networking, servers and launch platform required to run it. This means you can be up and running quickly, with little to no technical in-house expertise.”
